Men with a low testosterone level are more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviour, aggressive attitudes, low self-esteem, low motivation and a high risk of depression and other psychiatric conditions, according to a new study.
But if you can spot it, you can also help reduce your risk.
Read moreA study led by Dr. Joseph E. Fischbacher of the University of Southern California and his colleagues found that when men had their testosterone levels measured, their levels increased by 5 to 7 per cent on average, while their depression scores decreased by 2 to 4 per cent.
That’s a difference of about two to four percentage points.
But while men with lower testosterone levels are more prone to depression, Fischbach’s team also found that they were less likely to engage in aggressive behaviour than their higher-performing peers.
And they also found they had lower levels of low self‐esteem and a higher risk of having low motivation.
“There are two big differences between the sexes,” Fischberg said in a news release.
“One is that men with higher testosterone levels experience lower rates of depression.
The other is that higher testosterone is associated with greater levels of anxiety and lower levels on depression.”
The researchers found that men who had a lower testosterone level had a much higher risk for having a depressive episode.
“This may be due to the fact that the stress of testosterone and its effects on depression are much more severe for males,” Fiselbach said.
Fischbachers findings are similar to a 2013 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
That study, which looked at the outcomes of 4,200 men and found that those with higher levels of testosterone had a significantly higher rate of depression compared to those with lower levels.
The researchers said they found similar findings when looking at the results of a study on 6,800 men and also found similar results when looking into the outcomes from a study of more than 9,000 men.
“These results may be useful for clinicians and the general public, who might want to reduce the risk of developing depression or other mental health conditions in men,” Fichbacher said in the release.
For now, the only way to prevent high testosterone levels in men is to get them checked out by their GP, or to use hormone replacement therapy, which helps lower testosterone.
“Hormone replacement therapy can be a very effective strategy to prevent and treat the development of male depression,” Fichtbacher noted.
